Tutorial Workshop: HPC Visualization with ParaView

9am - 5pm Sunday, March 31st, 2013

The Visualization Core Laboratory is pleased to announce a one-day course on HPC Visualization with ParaView, offered by Utkarsh Ayachit, principal developer for ParaView from Kitware, Inc. ParaView is an open-source, multi-platform data analysis and visualization application. ParaView users can quickly build visualizations to analyze their data using qualitative and quantitative techniques. The data exploration can be done interactively in 3D or programmatically using ParaView's batch processing capabilities.

ParaView was developed to analyze extremely large datasets using distributed memory computing resources. It can be run on supercomputers to analyze datasets of terascale as well as on laptops for smaller data.


Mr. Ayachit is the principal developer for the ParaView Enterprise Edition and is part of the team that develops ParaView.  Previously, he helped design and develop the Intrusion Detection Toolkit (IDtk) which uses glyph-based visualization techniques to help distinguish false positives from real intrusive attempts.  Mr. Ayachit’s work is primarily focused on data visualization; agent architectures and multiagent systems; information retrieval; artificial intelligence; and the design and analysis of algorithms.

Registration is first-come-first-serve, as the class only has ~34 Workstations. More participants could be accommodated, but may need to bring their own laptop with ParaView pre-installed. You can download and install ParaView from here: .

Class Schedule

The class will be divided into two sessions:


Time: 9:00 am - 12:30 pm, Venue: Computer Lab, Campus Library

ParaView for Beginners

This session is targeted towards beginners and intermediate users of ParaView. An introduction to the ParaView GUI will be offered and basic concepts of visualizing small to medium sized data would be demonstrated in a hands-on session. Different capabilities of ParaView with ultra-large datasets will also be explained (but not demonstrated) during this session.

HPC Visualization with ParaView

This is meant to be a relatively open session for "power" users of ParaView. Advanced ParaView users will have the opportunity to consult with Mr. Ayachit on their experience and usage of ParaView and it's Python interface, and get their queries answered. Participants are encouraged to bring their own datasets (if available) to this session.
