Workshop: Introduction to The KAUST Visualization Laboratory

The Visualization Laboratory is pleased to announce a half-day introductory workshop at the KAUST Visualization Laboratory on Thursday, January 28th. Experts will provide an overview of services and facilities available to the KAUST academic community through the Lab. Topics will include:


·      Using the large Tiled-Display Wall for scientific presentations and visualization

·      Large-scale Data Analysis and 3D Visualization

·      Virtual Reality (Oculus Rift) for Interactive Scientific Storytelling

·      Accessing facilities and resources at the KAUST Visualization Laboratory

Schedule Overview

Session-1: 9:00am – 10:00am

Introduction to Visualization Facilities

Visualization Lab Showcase, Building-1 Level-2 (Sea-side)


A series of demonstrations on using the various facilities at the lab will be given. The demonstrations will include:

·      Working with AVIZO (Scientific Visualization Software) on the Display Wall

·      Working with ParaView (HPC Visualization Software) on the Display Wall

·      Using the Display Wall for Scientific Presentations

·      Sonification Overview


The session will be followed by a coffee-break between 10:00-10:30am. Laboratory staff will be available to answer any questions, or discuss projects with the audience.

Session-2: 10:30am – 12:00pm

Scientific Visualization Case Studies

Visualization Lab Showcase, Building-1 Level-2 (Sea-side)


·      10:30am – 11:00am: BrainVR – Interactive Scientific Story-telling with commodity VR Devices

·      11:00am – 11:30am: Exploring the Red Sea – Visualization Pipelines and Analysis Workflows 

·      11:30am – 11:15am: Visualizing flow across Water Desalination Membranes 

·      11:45am – 12:00pm: Nanowires and Cancer Cells 


Project PIs and laboratory staff will present case-studies on scientific visualization projects being worked on in the lab.
